Microalgal food sources greatly improve macroinvertebrate growth in detritus?based headwater streams: Evidence from an instream experiment

چکیده

In forested headwater streams, inconspicuous food resources such as epilithic microalgae can play a major role owing to their content of long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) that are essential for macroinvertebrate development. Yet, the use these and consequences consumers life-history traits remain scarcely studied, especially non-herbivorous taxa. Using instream mesocosms, we aimed understand how two species, shredder detritivore (Gammarus pulex) scraper (Rhithrogena semicolorata), available organic under light versus shaded conditions (high low amounts phototrophic biofilm, respectively). We specifically focused on origin carbon (C) lipids (PUFAs, sterols) assimilated by species effects compounds survival growth. When autotrophic biofilms were (mesocosms exposed light), both experienced significantly higher growth than in mesocosms placed dark. Rhithrogena nymphs, imago emergence rates positively affected access biofilms. stable isotope analysis (?13C ?15N), demonstrated dark macroinvertebrates C detrital origin. Under conditions, most R. semicolorata was derived from around 11% fine particles (FPOM). Gammarus pulex part its sources (mainly FPOM) The results isotopic analyses (?13C) (FAs) sterols showed entirely dependent meet dietary FAs sterol requirements. contrast, quantitatively important G. terms supply, irrespective tested. For consumers, seemed be complementary source, but yet cover large requirements long-chain PUFAs. This study clearly confirmed ecological importance functional feeding groups streams providing new insights trophic PUFAs diet.

Spatio-Temporal Variability in Benthic Macroinvertebrate Communities in Headwater Streams in South Korea

Comprehensive research on the structural and functional variability of benthic macroinvertebrate communities within headwater streams is limited, despite the fact that the majority of streams within a watershed are headwater streams that form the primary link between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Therefore, we investigated the structure and function of benthic macroinvertebrate communitie...

Macroinvertebrate community responses to hydrological controls and groundwater abstraction effects across intermittent and perennial headwater streams.

Intermittent rivers comprise a significant proportion of river networks globally and their spatial extent is predicted to increase with rising water abstraction pressures. Despite this, the ecological implications of hydrological modifications within intermittent rivers have received limited research attention. This paper examines macroinvertebrate assemblages across intermittent and perennial ...

Framing Bias in the Interpretation of Quality Improvement Data: Evidence From an Experiment

Background A growing body of public management literature sheds light on potential shortcomings to quality improvement (QI) and performance management efforts. These challenges stem from heuristics individuals use when interpreting data. Evidence from studies of citizens suggests that individuals’ evaluation of data is influenced by the linguistic framing or context of that information an...

Conditions in Agricultural Headwater Streams

11 Whilst the processes involved in the cycling of dissolved phosphorus (P) in rivers have been 12 extensively studied, less is known about the mechanisms controlling particulate P concentrations 13 during small and large flows. This deficiency is addressed through an analysis of large numbers of 14 suspended particulate matter (SPM) samples collected under baseflow (n = 222) and storm event (n...

An assessment of nitrogen removal from headwater streams in an agricultural watershed, northeast Ohio, U.S.A

The objective of this project was to assess in-stream nitrogen removal capacity in a fragmented agricultural landscape and to compare removal capacities in streams with agricultural or residential (hereafter referred to as agricultural streams) and forested riparian land use. We also identified what stream characteristics control nitrogen removal in these systems. We examined paired reaches (on...
